Starting from the Norman period, a series of castles were built in Apulia along the ancient roman streets, considered the most important ways for the trade. But when came Frederick II of Swebia, the puer Apulie, the man who defined the region as the “light of his eyes”, started a long work of renovation of all the old buildings which were replaced with new imposing castles.
The most important castles located in the territory of the Alta Murgia visible today are: the Garagnone castle, the Castle of Gravina di Puglia and the very famous Castel del Monte.
